The system is a device that is fitted onto the head of babies that have been without oxygen during the perinatal period. Researchers have already shown many brain perinatal birth injury recoveries occur in the first few hours after birth, and the device is able to lower the temperature of the baby's brain during the most important time to recovery. Some cells that are able to survive the perinatal birth injury can swell and die in the hours after, which the device would help prevent from happening. Data indicates 98,000 patients die every year because of medical mistakes. This does not include the number of patients that suffer serious injury, including a perinatal birth injury. The number of medical mistakes leading to death in the U.S. is so high that it exceeds the number of people that die in highway accidents. While human errors are not always preventable, there are mistakes that can be better prevented by applying stronger precautionary practices. Especially with a perinatal birth injury, the injuries suffered can become permanent intellectual disabilities that will affect the child's entire life and sometimes require a high amount of special needs.
