Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy,
or gall bladder removal, is a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder
when inflammation, blockage, gallstones, or cancer is present. Smaller
incisions and the use of a small video camera on a tube called the laparoscope
is used to perform a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The surgeon inflates
the abdomen with carbon dioxide so that there is more room to work during
the procedure. While laparoscopic cholecystectomy has a shorter hospital
stay and better aesthetic results than an open cholecystectomy, laparoscopic
cholecystectomy may not be the best choice when more complex cases are
presented.
In laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the incision will be made at the navel,
allowing the laparoscope to be inserted into the abdomen. The gallbladder
is an organ beneath the liver that stores bile but is not necessary in order
to maintain a healthy life. Performing a laparoscopic cholecystectomy has
become an acceptable standard of care for patients that are in need of a
cholecystectomy.
The high frequency of laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been linked to increased
risks of suffering injury related to the bile ducts, bowel, and vascular
structures when compared to an open cholecystectomy. Not everyone will qualify
for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and the increased risk may outweigh
the necessity of the surgical procedure. Over time, laparoscopic cholecystectomy
has increased in popularity for aesthetic reasons. The minimal scars left
from the procedure can also allow for less disruption from normal life because
of the reduced hospital stay.
If a complication occurs during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy the patient
may want to consider consulting with an attorney. There are risks to every
surgical procedure, however medical mistakes kill up to 10,000 Americans
every year, injuring hundreds of thousands more. Medical professionals will
do everything in their power to perform a safe and proper procedure the
majority of the time, but mistakes do happen. In the instances of a laparoscopic
cholecystectomy accident, patients have legal rights and options.
