Plastic Surgery Malpractice
Plastic
surgery used to be something middle class Americans did not ever consider.
Over the last couple years the number of plastic surgery procedures performed
have significantly increased nationwide. The emergence and popularity
of reality television shows that are based on plastic surgery procedures
have also allowed for large amounts of advertising to reach middle class
Americans when previously just the rich and famous considered aesthetic
procedures. With the increase in procedures has also come more room for
medical malpractice plastic surgery reports as private practices are trying
to cash in on the highly lucrative profession.
The increase in problematic occurrences during procedures is because of
the failure for mandatory safety laws to apply to private offices. This
means that most state laws do not apply to private offices and the absence
of federal regulations governing what type of doctor can perform plastic
surgery will dramatically increase the risks of medical malpractice plastic
surgery. Florida tried to tighten its regulations on plastic surgery several
years ago, leading to other states following suit, but the new implementations
appear to have failed to lessen any medical malpractice plastic surgery
reports.
The state had made reporting death mandatory and placed a limitation on
how long a patient can be under anesthesia during plastic surgery since
the majority of plastic surgery deaths and complications are attributed
to anesthesia. A recent April 30, 2004 released study more sturdily confirmed
patients were more likely to die because of anesthesia related complications.
As lawsuits, reports, and life debilitating events occur and are blamed
on medical malpractice plastic surgery, a lot more focus needs to be shifted
to protecting the safety of consumers.
There are no requirements for plastic surgeons to become certified in performing
procedures in any state besides a license to practice medicine. In the absence
of a national record for the number of deaths and serious complications
occurring as a result of a procedure, it is not known how many medical malpractice
plastic surgery cases there have been. This allows for a lack of specialized
training in plastic surgery, combined with invasive surgeries being performed
in private offices that do not allow for the same medical emergency resources
that hospitals have.
Reputable hospitals would not even allow a high number of plastic surgeons
to operate in its facilities because of the lack of specialized training,
so if a medical malpractice plastic surgery did occur the patient's condition
may not even be immediately treatable. Especially in procedures like liposuction,
considered one of the most dangerous plastic surgeries, if performed by
a surgeon not adequately trained a much higher risk of potential medical
malpractice plastic surgery will exist. The procedure requires a wand to
be repeatedly jabbed in the patient to suck out the fat and the risk of
accidentally hitting a vital organ becomes much greater.
From the 696,904 procedures performed in the U.S. to the over 8.6 million
performed in 2003, patients must become more aware of the potential risks
involved and understand the necessity of making sure their surgeon has been
board certified and the office is accredited to perform surgeries. In addition,
checking to see if there are any allegations of medical malpractice plastic
surgery against the doctor can prevent any additional risk to be present.
While plastic surgery allows a lot of positive alterations in people's lives
in a society driven to look and feel fit, a stronger focus also needs to
be placed on safety concerns in response.
