Surgical Mistakes
Medical
errors kill up to 98,000 Americans each year. In the U.S., there are probably
more surgeries than anywhere else in the world, but alongside the high
number of surgical procedures are also a high number of surgical mistakes.
The widely growing acceptance for plastic surgery over the last several
years has caused a high increase in the number of invasive surgeries performed.
As plastic surgery becomes more accepted and more widely performed, the
focus on safety has diminished as patients have started to view the surgical
procedure as an achievable aesthetic fix but forgotten how risky they
can be.
Eager to get a piece of the highly lucrative field of plastic surgery,
it is easy to be more attracted to surgeons that advertise discount prices
without checking to see what their qualifications are. Especially in the
field of plastic surgery, the laws that apply are not very stringent. Most
state laws do not apply to private offices where an increasing number of
procedures are being performed, so no federal regulations governing which
doctors can perform the plastic surgeries exist.
More are more qualified plastic surgeons are getting patients with surgical
mistakes that need to be fixed. In addition to surgical mistakes that result
in aesthetically unpleasing looks, unqualified surgeons risk the lives of
every patient surgery is performed on. Most state laws focus more on hospital
and ambulatory care clinics so private offices are often almost completely
unregulated. The actual number of surgical mistakes that occur because of
unqualified plastic surgeons is unknown because there are no figures as
of yet being kept on the number of deaths and surgical mistakes from plastic
surgery.
With medical errors already taking the lives of tens of thousands of people
every year, the need to focus greater on patient safety, especially with
the emergence of plastic surgery popularity has become even more critical.
There are a high number of surgical mistakes that can easily be eliminated.
For example, according to statistics, over one third of all surgical mistakes
in ambulatory surgery centers and nearly one fifth of all surgical errors
in a hospital setting are because the surgeon has performed on the wrong
part of the body.
With any procedure, it is important to become as informed and educated
about all aspects of the surgery to avoid any preventable surgical mistakes.
A lot of patients do not ask questions because they don't know enough about
the procedure. Informed patients are able to ask questions and checkup on
their surgeons to better ensure they are receiving the correct surgery,
on the right part of the body, by a qualified surgeon. Even questioning
surgical techniques, including what types of instruments will be used can
reduce the number of surgical mistakes since some hospitals will try to
take shortcuts to save money.
